Oh, the Tradegy! -Marlaina Catalano
One beautiful afternoon, a Caucasian woman named Susie King was taking a walk around the town. There wasn’t much of a town, but it was home to her. Susie started to think and she said to herself, “I wish I could meet someone, or at least have something interesting happen to this boring town,” Little did she know, both would happen to her very soon. While Susie was walking, she accidentally bumped into a volunteer, soldier, who was being a little careless about where he was walking. His name is Adam Booth. He too would have never seen what was about to happen to him, and her, soon. After Susie and Adam collided, he asked her if he could walk her back to her house. She nodded her head and started walking, while instructing him where to walk along the way. When they got to her house, they both stood there for about two very awkward minutes. After the two minutes, Susie politely offered him to come inside for a cup of coffee, he, in return politely nodded his head yes and said, “Thank you very much ma’am, that’s very kind of you,” “Oh, no problem,” She answered back. They started their conversation by asking their names. “So, what is your name?” asked Adam, “my name is Susie king, what might yours be?” asked Susie in return, “My name would be Adam Booth,” After that, they carried on their conversation. About ten minutes later, Adam spotted Susie’s crocheting on the table. He asked, “What’s this pretty little thing?” “Oh that’s my crocheting that I’m working on,” explained Susie, “Could you teach me how to do that?” asked Adam kindly. “Sure, all you do is, make a slip knot then pull the other part of the string though, then keep doing that until you turn. Then you just crochet two extra times. Got it?” explained Susie. “Yeah, thanks a lot Susie,” said Adam. Oddly enough, he understood everything she said. He remembered his mother trying to teach him when he was a child. After a few weeks, Susie and Adam began to fall in love with each other. This wasn’t fake puppy love, this was real love. But the following week didn’t go so good. Adam walked into Susie’s house with a dark, depressed look on his face. She asked, “Why what’s wrong sweetie?” “….” There was a pause. “The army wants me to fight now,” explained Adam, “Now, right at the time that I just found love, and now it might be shattered.” Adam carried on. “Well you’ll be okay and you’ll come back to me right?” asked Susie hesitantly. “Gee, I sure hope so Sus. I would hate to die in a battle and leave you.” said Adam. “Adam, I love you, a lot, I really do.” Susie came out with it all. “I love you too Susie King,” answered Adam. A few weeks later, Susie received a letter from Adam at a battle camp. The letter said, “Dear Susie, the battle was horrific. All the bodies, the bodies dropped with a thump as they fell while the cannons were being fired. And, having to see my friends arm and legs and other parts being amputated was horrible. Some men had belly wounds and were left there on the battle field to die because the doctors can’t help them. Oh, and my friend said that we can’t tell anyone else about our relationship because that is against the law,” Susie began to cry softly. She read on, “Well I must be going now. I love you. Love, Adam,” she folded the letter and began thinking about her poor Adam, having to be scared out of his wits seeing people dying. But a month or so later, no letter had come by and she began to worry. But in a few days, she received a package. The packaged contained a letter and Adam’s crocheting. She pulled out the crocheting; her eyes widened with the sight of what might have been the prettiest crocheting she’s ever seen; Adam had made her a pink heart. It reminded her of how much they loved each other. She put the heart aside and read the note. It read, “Sus. I hope you like the crocheting I made you, Love Adam,” Susie then folded the letter up and went to make some coffee. While Susie was making coffee, Adam had just won his battle with the Rebs. Adam raised his rifle, and began to throw it up and down in the air. While he was doing that, the rifle yelled with joy from winning the battle. But before Adam could talk to Susie again, she had left her home without a word to Adam. In fact, she didn’t say a word to anyone. It was as if she vanished into thin air. Adam was heartbroken. A few days later, Adam received a letter from the Union Army saying that they needed him for just one more battle. At the battle, Adam had gotten a belly wound; he was left there to die, and painful death. While Adam was lying on the ground, he had a thought of his beautiful Susie. He imagined life with her, being married to her, having children. It would have been perfect he thought. And with that, Adam had died.
